Why RAP?

The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) provides the opportunity for students to earn senior high school credits and apprenticeship hours toward journeyperson certification.

  • Start post-secondary education while still in high school. 
  • Earn up to 40 credits toward a High School Diploma or Certificate of Achievement.
  • Obtain a Blue Book and log up to 1,000 hours toward journeyperson certification.
  • Qualify for scholarships.
  • Prepare for opportunities in high-demand and rewarding careers.
  • Get a head start on the transition to life beyond high school.

Designated Trades in Alberta

RAP placements must in on one of the over 50 designated trades in Alberta, and students must work under the supervision of a certified journeyperson for that trade. To explore a list of trades that would align with the RAP program please visit the Apprenticeship in Industry Training webiste.

Prerequisite Courses

As specified in Alberta Education's Off-Campus Education Handbook (2019), RAP students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a minimum of 15 years of age or older
  • HCS3000: Workplace Safety Systems (1 credit) – required
  • HCS3010: Workplace Safety Practices (1 credit) – recommended

EIPS requires the following:

  • Student is on track with graduation plan. 
  • Student has good academic standing, particularly in math, science and English.
  • Student has excellent attendance at school, good citizenship and attitude.
  • Student submits a resume, cover letter and completes job-specific safety training (CSTS2020, WHIMIS, Safe Food Handling, etc.).

Employers will favour students who:

  • have a valid drivers licence
  • are available to work full-time for a minimum of one semester
  • are close to graduation or returning after graduation
  • have CTS or transferable experience in their chosen trade

Finding a RAP Placement

RAP placements must be approved by EIPS. Students can find a placement in one of the following ways:

  1. Working alongside a friend or family member who is a journeyperson.
  2. Applying for positions on their own.
  3. Working with EIPS Career Pathways and CAREERS to apply on a position.
