Work Experience

The Work Experience program is a partnership between the school division and local employers that provides students with the opportunity to gain high school credits and experiential learning activities as part of a planned school program under the supervision of an off-campus education coordinator.

The Work Experience program provides opportunities for students to:

  • earn up to 15 high school credits towards graduation
  • apply, in the workplace, knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired through other course work
  • discover their career interests and aptitudes in meaningful work activities

Prerequisite Courses

As specified in Alberta Education's Off-Campus Education Handbook (2019), students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a minimum of 15 years of age or older
  • HCS3000: Workplace Safety Systems (1 credit) – required

EIPS requires the following:

  • Student is on track with graduation plan.
  • Student has good academic standing, particularly in math, science and English.
  • Student has excellent attendance at school, good citizenship and attitude.
  • Student demonstrates accountability for their learning.

Finding a Work Experience Placement

The Work Experience program provides opportunities for the school and community to combine resources to further the student’s personal development, career planning and employability skills through placements in off-campus work stations or work sites. The school is NOT responsible for placing students.

Work Experience locations must be approved by EIPS. Students must be supervised during their shift. Students can find a location one of the following ways:

  1. Already having part-time employment or volunteering in the community.
  2. Applying for local positions on their own using the EIPS Opportunity Board or another platform of choice.
  3. Applying for in-school positions (if available).
