Apprenticeship & Credentialed Pathways

Career & Technology Studies Apprenticeship Programs

Enhancing the CTS program is integral to transforming the educational experience of high school students. CTS programs create more flexible, inclusive and personalized learning opportunities.

CTS Apprenticeship Pathways must be taught in an Alberta Education approved facility. The facility is the responsibility of the school authority and must be equipped to industry standards to deliver the CTS Apprenticeship Pathway.

All required courses in a CTS Apprenticeship Pathway must be taught by a journeyperson for that trade—that is, an individual holding a trade certificate recognized in Alberta.

Apprenticeship Pathways
Students begin to learn their skills in a variety of apprenticeship areas and upon successful completion they may choose to write the Apprenticeship and Industry exam for first period apprenticeship.

Current Apprenticeship Pathways offered in Elk Island Public Schools include:

  • Automotive Service Technician (ASA)
  • Cabinetmaker (CMA)
  • Cook (CKA)
  • Hairstylist (HSA)
  • Welder (WDA)

CTS Credentialed Pathways

A pathway is a selection of courses providing students with opportunities to explore and acquire the attitudes, skills, knowledge and values for a potential career. Pathways can help students work toward goals that may include university, college, apprenticeship training or moving directly into the workforce.

A credentialed pathway is a series of specific courses selected to provide opportunities for students to achieve a credential or credit awarded by a recognized community or industry organization or post-secondary institution.

Credentialed pathways have been aligned with post-secondary and industry standards. Alberta Education does not award the credential and/or articulation; however, the pathways have been created using outcomes from the governing bodies.

Students may take these courses for high school credit and apply to challenge the credential and/or articulation exam. It is up to the governing body for the desired credential and/or articulation to allow the student to challenge the exam.
