Dual Credit

What Is Dual Credit?

Through Dual Credit opportunities, students can earn college/university credits from a Post-Secondary institution and high school credits in select programs.  These opportunities are in partnership with Elk Island Public Schools Division, Lakeland College, Portage College, Norquest College, Olds College, and Alberta Education.

Dual credit helps students to:

  • get started on a Post-Secondary education while still in high school
  • save money on Post-Secondary tuition costs (through the Dual Credit Framework, high school students do not pay post-secondary tuition fees (other than the cost of textbooks)
  • potentially earn credits in high school and a Post-Secondary Institution at the same time
  • gain experience to succeed academically in a Post-Secondary environment

Students will be responsible for purchasing all textbooks and required resources materials (ie: robotics kit). These costs are set by the Post-Secondary Institution and indicated in the course descriptions. Information about purchasing the required materials will be provided to students once they have been accepted into the course.

Application Process

STEP 1: DETERMINE IF DUAL CREDIT IS RIGHT FOR YOU
Not everyone who applies for a Dual Credit opportunity will be accepted. It is important to have careful conversations between the student, parent, administrators, and Career Pathways Facilitators about the course you are interested in and what to expect from a college level curriculum.

Prior to applying, please make sure that you:

  • Have the prerequisites for the course.
  • Have a block of time in your schedule dedicated to the course.
  • Are committed to completing the course. Limited numbers of students can participate, and the course requires a major commitment on behalf of the student, the parent, the high school and the Post-Secondary Institution.
  • Understand it is YOUR responsibility to purchase any textbook/materials required for the course - these can be purchased through the online college Bookstores, Amazon.ca or other online stores. Costs are listed in the course descriptions and purchase information will be provided to successful applicants.
  • Have discussed your suitability for Dual Credit with your High School Administrator, Counsellor, etc. Administration will be contacted to discuss your suitability.

STEP 2: APPLY
Interested students will speak with their school administration and counsellors to set up a meeting with an EIPS Career Pathways Facilitator. After the meeting, the student will be advised on their eligibility to apply and the next steps.  Available spots will be filled on a first-come first-served basis. Late applications and incomplete forms will not be accepted. Application deadlines vary depending on the program and post-secondary institute.

STEP 3: CONFIRMATION

Once you are recommended to proceed, you and your parent/guardian will receive an email with instructions on how to apply to the Post-Secondary Institution. This includes completing the application required by the Post-Secondary Institution delivering the course. The Post-Secondary Institution has final approval on all applicants and is dependent on availability.
